Description: This 1893 antique book titled "Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and published by Thomas E. Crowell & Company features a beautiful gold gilded cover and is illustrated with black and white plates. It was gifted to a Fred S. Carharlle(?) for "Second Honor Oratory". Most interestingly, there's a newspaper clipping attached to the back flyleaf dating to 1945 which revisits the destruction of Lidice by the Nazis. This makes me wonder if the owner had some connection to the village and/or appreciated the parallel between the journalist's description of the emptied Czechoslovakian village and Longfellow's woeful description of Acadie in the book's prologue. It's haunting, in either case. This book measures about 8 inches tall by 5 1/4 inches wide. There's some soiling to the cover, but the gilding is still has sparkle. The pages are overall clean, back hinge intact with front hinge cracked, and binding tight. As mentioned, the back flyleaf contains (and is discolored by) a newspaper clipping.
