Description: A one-of a kind antique photo from the photo collection of Pacific Northwest photographer Oscar Loomis. His 1927-1937 collection spans a number of fascinating voyages on ships and on foot. Mr Loomis would go on to join the Merchant Marines in WWII. This personal photo is likely the only original in existence. This photograph depicts a large passenger ship identified as the "Empress of Canada" navigating through the 1st Narrows in Vancouver Harbor, British Columbia. The ship is seen in full view from the side, allowing the viewer to appreciate its structure and design. It was taken in 1931, as indicated by the text on the back of the photograph.The Empress of Canada was an ocean liner built and operated by the Canadian Pacific Steamships. Launched in 1920, it was used for both passenger travel and freight between Canada and the Asia-Pacific region. The 1st Narrows is the official name for the waters that link the Burrard Inlet to the Strait of Georgia, a significant feature of Vancouver's maritime geography.Present in this photo: None.
