Description: ANTIQUE NEWTON KURTZ & CO NEW YORK MECHANICAL PENCIL & PEN AMETHYST COMBO E352 This is a very nice antique Newton Kurtz & Co of New York mechanical propelling pencil with a nib pin in a hard rubber casing. Both are retractable and work well: twist the lower barrel for the pencil, push the golden midsection ring down over the hard rubber case for the ink nib. The nib is marked Newton Kurtz & Co New York; there are traces of black ink in ridges. The shaft is topped with a pale purple stone that tests as amethyst. The metal is a gold color and may be 14K gold (or gold fill?) as was is common with other recently sold Newton Kurtz & Co items, but it was not tested by us. The opening has what looks like engraving but it is difficult to read. There are small scratches to the metal and hard rubber part that are commensurate with age. Size of pencil lead is unknown. Research found on the Leadhead's Pencil blog (a very informative site) indicates the firm was formed in 1865 then rebranded in 1867 making Newton Kurtz & Co items rather rare. closed length: ~3 7/16 inchesopen length: ~4 7/16 inchestotal weight: ~13.30 g Please see photos for color, size and condition details.
