Description: Antique MIDDLESEX County Map By Thomas Kitchin Geog'r, Engineer to H.R.H. Duke of York. Decorative 18th century map with a key ('Remarks') and compass rose. Appeared in Henry Boswell's Antiquities of England & Wales (London: A. Hogg, 1786-1798). Hand Coloured, Copper Plate Engraving. Dated around 1769 Frame and mounted Original & authentic 34cm x 33cm (frame) Very good condition for age, with only superficial discolouration. Some wear and scratches to the frame. Thomas Kitchin was born in 1719 in St. Olave Parish in Southwark. and at the age of 13 became apprenticed to the English mapmaker and publisher Emanuel Bowen. At the age of 20 in 1732 he married Sarah Bowen, daughter of Emanuel. Thomas Kitchin and Emanuel Bowen continued to work together until about 1741 when Thomas went it alone, working at 'The Star, Holborn Hill'. Although he published books & maps on many subjects.
