Description: Antique Memento Mori – Beautifully Carved & Painted Wood Figure – Folk-art – Mid-19th Century This beautiful and eye-catching Memento Mori figure from the mid-19th Century was skillfully carved and painted by an unknown master in England or (less likely) Germany. Carved from a single piece of wood, the figure has folk-art character with equal proportions of unsettling and intriguing aspects. Said to have been whispered to Julius Caesar, art and personal items on memento mori [Latin]–'remember death' or 'remember that you are mortal'–were common in Europe from the 17th Century to the late 19th Century. Death was a constant companion and never far away, striking without respect for rank or social status through disease, injury, violence, and war. The Memento Mori figure depicts two things:- On the right side, a middle-aged man with an unusual hairstyle and a large trimmed mustache, typical of the 19th Century. Appearing to be in his fifties, the recently deceased man is looking up ['towards heaven']. He is wearing a round black hat with flat rim, typical of the mid-19th Century.- On the left side, a pale white human skull with large empty eye-sockets. He is smiling at us with an unsettling grin; 'a gentle reminder that in the end, this is what awaits us. This is the journey we all will make. Death is waiting, never far away'. Please take a moment to review the video and the photos; they are part of the description. Dimension (max height x max circumference): 4.5'' x 3.5'' (with base); 2.75'' x 2'' (head/skull).Weight: ~6 oz Thank you for looking! :)
