Description: Pair of antique American majolica plates with the Griffin Smith Hill "Etruscan Majolica" mark on the back of both, which dates these to about 1880. The iconic design is a green leaf on a basketweave background, and they actually have reverse colorations...on one plate the green leaf has pink edges on a yellow basketweave background, and on the other the leaf has yellow edges on a pink background. They measure 9" in diameter and are both in excellent condition by antique majolica standards. The yellow one has a 1/8" glaze nick on the edge, and one on the foot. The pink one has no damage, but it has bleeding of the green paint onto the background, which I think makes it even more charming. They both have crazing throughout. One has the sticker of the antique dealer from whom the owner purchased it on the bottom. This is part of a lovely collection of antique majolica that I recently acquired and will be listing over the next week.
