Description: Antique Longfellows Poetical Works Book, Illustrated Large Gilt Poetry HC 1883 -- RARE Gold gilt ornate HC Antique Poetry Book Illustrated 19th century -- This very old, Henry Wadsworth Longfellows Poetical Works is Illustrated and published by Houghton Mifflin Co 1883 in an oversized format. It is an exceptionally preserved, first edition thus book of Longfellow's Poetry and elaborately decorated with gilt details, including the leaf tips! First published in 1841 by the poet himself, this later, early illustrated edition from Houghton, Mifflin & Co is a 2nd printing from the19th century produced in 1883. It looks perfectly lovely upon the bookshelf and any poetical bibliophile would be proud to own it. Highly collectible, RARE and a popular, well sought after poet, this book is a treasure worth keeping. Beginning with the mysterious title, "Voices in the Night," Henry Wadsworth Longfellow entices us readers with a prelude, "Pleasant it was, when woods were green And winds were soft and low, To lie amid some sylvan scene, Where, the long dripping boughs between, Shadows dark and sunlight sheen Alternate come and go;" The editor has included other verses which relate to Longfellow's work in his addition, such as opening this first page with a passage from Euripides, in Greek. In GOOD 'collectors condition.' Spine is healthy with no exposed stitching or gutters. Shows some shelf wear to the top and bottom of the spine which are bumped and board edges and corners slightly scuffed, but barely and not bent. Green canvas covered boards are slightly discolored with scuffing as well. Gold gilt details are lustrous and bright. Handwritten inscription at front from Xmas 1894. Tissue over frontispiece is in tact. Illustrated in black and white throughout. The crisp smooth pages flip beautifully. Printed on a heavy weight, satin paper that is thick and slight off-white. No foxing present. No other marked, creased, missing, loose, or torn pages. I am gentle with this book, though it is sound, because it is very precious in age. This gorgeous, large, antique book of poetry by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow has a lot of history written in its gold tipped leaves. A first edition thus, 2nd printing from the 19th century, it has survived over a century not only in tact, but in impeccable condition and is still ready for reading time and time again. A perfect addition to any poetry lovers book collection. 348 pages 10 1/8" x 6 3/4" x 1" Houghton, Mifflin & Co- 2nd printing, 1883 "In the ancient town of Bruges, In the quaint old Flemish city, As the evening shades descended, Low and loud and sweetly blended, Low at times and loud at times, And changing like a poet's rhymes, Rang the beautiful wild chimes From the Belfry in the market Of the ancient town of Bruges." - by Henry W.
