Description: HEREND – THE ART OF HUNGARIAN PORCELAIN by Gyozo Sikota, Puski Publishing, NY, 1988. Beautifully illustrated with 75 color plates and numerous black and white photographs, this scarce out-of-print book provides a scholarly survey of Hungary’s Herend porcelain manufactory including information on decoration and hallmarks. “Dr. Gyozo Sikota, former artistic director of the porcelain factories of Hungary who earned the silver medal of honour for services rendered to the Republic of Austria, presents in this richly illustrated book the one-hundred-sixty-year history of Herend, providing exciting insights into the workings of the factory.” This book reviews the history of this firm and its production, and provides descriptions of all items listed and also information on marks. ”Herend, known throughout the world for its fine porcelain, is actually a small town near Lake Balaton, in western Hungary, where for centuries country potters have been making their earthenware vessels. This is where Vinzenz Stingl founded his factory in 1826. Faced with serious difficulties at the outset, the shop was soon able to produce increasingly more and finer porcelain, until at the first Hungarian craft exhibition in 1842, Herend became recognized for its fine quality products. Mor Fischer was now the firm’s owner and director, and soon he led his factory to fame with his reproductions of original Chinese porcelain. Traditionally, Herend porcelain is painted by hand. Highly gifted painters create the most beautiful patterns, flowers and figures on the clear white china, either before or after it is glazed.” Pictured in this rare book are figurines, dinnerware and table setting items, vases and urns, candelabra sets, wonderful statues and other porcelain works of art. This invaluable book belongs in the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of European antique pottery and porcelain. 8.3” x 10.6” hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 187 pages.
