Description: Antique Georgian ring. Gold, rock crystal and diamonds with traces of enamel. Made in England, Great Britain and dated 1732.Unisex - can be worn by a man or a woman. Measurements: Weight is 2.8 grams. US size 6.75. Description : Petite, narrow, elegant ring. The bezel consists of a central rectangular colette-set rock crystal. It has a large, flat crown and faceted sides. Looking into the crown, we see a small skull, a reminder of death. The center is flanked on either side by very simply rose-cut diamonds with gold pulled up, rubbed over, mounts. Shoulders with a series of ridges indented into the hoop. Back of bezel has that lovely fluted, fan shape that can be seen in old Georgian rings. The hoop or shank was once enamelled in black, but much of this enamelling has worn away over the last 300. There are still clear remnants of the enamel between the letters. Letters read: ROB SAUNDERS OB 25 NOV 1732 ZE:48 There is little flowers between some of the letters such as between the first and last name and ridges like those on the shoulders, before the OB. The skull and information remind us of the life and death of a loved one and to remember that death is always present and comes for all. The date in Nov is not clear - could be 23 or 28. Marks and Metal: No marks as is to be expected. We acid tested the gold as 18ct, and will guarantee at least 15ct. Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. The black enamel is almost worn away. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer. The narrow, band-like shape makes the ring versatile - it can be worn alone to make an elegant and interesting statement, or perfectly stacked with other rings. THE STORY: Memorial jewelry, remembering those who had passed away, played a huge part in the jewelry collections of people in bygone ages. Not only were there strict laws governing what color could be worn according to elapsed time since the death and closeness of the relative, but people actually left sums of money in their wills to have memorial jewelry made for specified people. This ring probably fell into the latter category. Mr Rob Saunders left money for someone to wear a ring to remember him. For close on 300 years, generations have continued to do so and his ring and name live on as they will do in the future. It's a rare priviledge to know the name and dates of the original owner of a ring.Memento Mori jewelry is highly sought after and collected today, in particular rings with small skulls.
