Antique Facsimile George & Martha Washington Bowl Cup & Saucer (2) c. 1872

Description: Initialed George & Martha Washington Hand Painted Armorial Bowl Cup & Saucer. Antique Facsimili Pre 1872 Americana Memorabilia. Two sets. Cup: 3 7/16" diameter at rim x 2 1/16" high. Saucer: 5 11/16" Written on the back of one as follows: "This Cup is Facsimili of those used by Martha Washington. At the first Martha Washington Hotel in New York in 1872 under auspices of the St.John's Guild to raise money for the Floating babies Hospital these Cups were sold as Souvenirs. Bought at Allias Bazaar 1916 by G.SW." As I understand it, there was a Martha Washington Hotel in New York pre dating the grand one which was completed in 1903 which does not seem to be documented online. The history of the Floating Hospital is described in Wikipedia in part but it's begining's were as follows: "In the Summer of 1872,George F.Williams, a managing editor of the New York Times, witnessed a policeman forcing a group of newsboys in City Hall Park off the grass and onto the concrete walkways which burned they're feet. When Williams returned to his office the next day, he wrote an appeal to the Times Readership for money to charter a boat trip for the city's newsboys and boot blacks so they could be turned loose on grassy shores of nearby waterways." So they're source is documented up until they were resold in 1916 by Allias Bazaar. So in summary this set would have been made around 1872 reproducing the18th Century ChineseExport Porcelain owned by George & Martha Washington in the 18th Century.
