Description: Up for sale is a really nice dovetailed antique document box which is signed inside C.E. Merrill Plymouth NH, except they misspelled Plymuth with no O. Unless thats how it was spelled then. It also has some other writing withe the date 1896, June 7. I can't really read the rest. It might have been when they got the box. The box definitely predates that date and the writing it different than the Block letters that form the name. I believe the box dates to 1835-1850 or so. I can't find an exact match to CE but Elizabeth Caroline Kelly married an Arthur Merrill in 1849. In two census she is listed at Caroline Elizabeth so its possibly hers and would date around the time of their marriage. I cant tell where they got married but they later lived in Concord NH. He was a descendent of Jacob Merrill a founder of Plymouth. Box could have been made as a wedding token. Either way looks like the Merrill Family was a part of the founding of the town. Still streets named after them. 11 inches wide by almost 8 and half inches deep. Just over 3 inches tall. It is missing the lock. Condition: Nice condition. Great attic surface. All original wood with no repairs. Has some scratches and wear on the outside. Inside it has some additional writing which I think was added in 1897. No touch ups to the surface. Hinges are original as are the screws. Has two cracks in the lid but they seem stable. See photos and video for condition.
