Description: This is a marvellous Antique Bilston Enamel Patch Box dating to c19th Century, which is in good condition, but does exhibit some age-related wear as you would expect. It measures approximately 4.5cm wide. A Patch Box, resembling a Snuff Box, was a small, usually rectangular, sometimes oval or round box, used mostly as a receptacle to store false beauty spot patches, especially in the 18th century. These were pieces of gummed Taffeta or other fabric was used to emphasise the beauty of the skin or to draw attention to particular facial features. These beautifully decorated dainty boxes, sometimes with mirrors inside, perfectly captured the growing fashion for beauty products such as rouge and patches in the Eighteenth Century. They were sometimes given as a gift, which was an expression of admiration and sentiment.
