Description: Magnificent pair of Antique c.1850-1900 Penobscot Native American, Eastern Algonquin Nations (Maine) Wood & Hide Handmade Snow Shoes. Estate piece acquired in the 70's in New Hampshire. Prized snowshoes hand constructed and intricately woven by a Penosbscot craftsman from hide, gut (sinew) and red thread on wood. Noted that Wabanaki snowshoes were about three times as long as they were wide, with tails of five or more inches. Maine was the center of snowshoe production from the 1850s to the 1940s and Wabanaki snowshoes were renowned for their superb craftsmanship and durability. Measures approx. 37 1/2" L. 12" W and 8" tail. Condition: Good.
