Description: Antique cast Orthodox road icon from the 19th century, size 14.2 x 11.7 cm. Depicts the Prophet Elijah or the Fiery Ascent of the Prophet Elijah with scenes from his life. On the left, the prophet is shown in the cave with a raven holding a bunch of grapes in its beak. At the bottom, an angel appears to Elijah as he sleeps, and the prophet Elijah and his disciple Elisha cross the Jordan River. In the top section, there is a fiery chariot with Elijah holding a mantle in his left hand and Elisha receiving the mantle below. In the upper left corner, a blessing right hand is depicted. On the reverse side, there is a floral ornament in the form of a stylized tree with flowers. It is difficult to understand why the prophet who rebuked the wicked Israelite kings in the 9th century BC becomes a thoroughly Russian saint responsible for thunder and lightning, as well as timely rainfall. This is probably because one of the first Christian churches in Kiev, built long before the baptism of Rus, was the Church of St. Elijah. The characteristic features of Perun, the main deity of the ancient Slavic pantheon, merged with Elijah, whom the Kievans who did not fully adopt the new faith long considered more important than Christ. The casting of Elijah has been known since ancient times. In small icons, which existed both independently and as intermediaries and wings (less frequently), the composition of the Fiery Ascent was embodied.
