Description: Antique Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks "Hello Bill" Pocket Watch Fob Dues Membership Locket Enjoy FREE SHIPPINGExcellent Antique Condition.It is hard to believe the clasps and hinges are over 100 years old as they work perfectly.Rectangular locket bears The Elks symbolic Elk head. Pinstripe engraved motif with intricate filigree edging, and cartouche monogrammed with the initials: W C HDesigned to hold membership papers–and some also say Rolling Papers.Designed and made by Breadner Manufacturing. Co., Ltd. (BM. Co.) Ottawa, Canada.Inside, “Hello Bill” clasps are in excellent condition.The significance and origin of the term “Hello Bill” is a delightful nod to Brother William Goddard.In 1897, Brother Goddard served on a great number of committees, in addition to being both the treasurer of Minneapolis Lodge, No. 44, B. P. O. Elks, and Chairman of the Finance Committee at Headquarters. He was the “GO-TO” guy.When visiting Elks came to the headquarters to inquire about matters they wanted to know about, if they happened to meet anybody who was not fully posted, they were usually told to "Go over there and ask Billy Goddard," and it was a constant strain of "Billy can tell you," "See Billy, he knows," etc., etc. This was repeated so incessantly that the stranger Elks when they approached Brother Goddard, greeted him with the expression, "Hello Bill! I was told to see you," etc., and so the custom started of greeting each other "Hello Bill!"The custom quickly spread within the Elks so quickly, that the term "Hello Bill!" became a familiar refrain within the Brotherhood.The greeting was carried back to home lodges, and is now an international Brothers greet one another.
