Description: ANTIQUE PHYSIOLOGY BOOK (A MANUAL OF PHYSIOLOGY) With Handwritten Notes Date, Publisher and Author Unknown* (19th Century) Hardcover, 109 pages plus 63 Handwritten Pages** *This is truly a weird and unique volume - it lacks the title page and publisher's page (but has the half-title page) but the half-title page states: A MANUAL OF PHYSIOLOGY. The first handwritten page is titled Notes from Dalton's Physiology, but the Contents pages in the book does not correspond to any edition of John C.Dalton's Treatise on Human Physiology that I could find. Making matters more complicated (in terms of identification) the book begins at page 213 and ends at page 324, Chapters I (Organic Matter) through IX - Development (Conception, Birth, Infancy, etc.) so in a sense, it appears to be complete. It is possible this is part of a large work but there is no way of knowing for sure. **Although the book has numerous engraved illustrations (No. 126 - No. 324) including that of a foetal skeleton, the real value is in the copious pages of handwritten notes that are bound into this volume. Most of them are in lined white paper. There are two names written in the book - John G. Lee, on the inside front cover written with old-fashioned pen, and W. S. Marshall, Milwaukee, WI, 2-16-'86, written in pen in a different style on the first black endpaper, but neither of these are likely to be much help as far as identification goes. There is also a stamp on the half-title page - HOWARD A. SCHNEIDERMAN DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY LABORATORY, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE, CALIFORNIA, 92664. The book is in good condition with the typical cover wear of an earlier 19th century book (spine end and corner wear) but the binding and interior are good. Not knowing the author and date of publication is a definite disadvantage but perhaps you may find more clues in the numerous pages of handwritten notes that I haven't had the time to delve into.
