The piece depict hunters on horseback in red uniform with their dogs, visiting women at a cottage. It is an oil painted on wood, and has been professionally cleaned and re-framed. It is meticulously detailed, and a fine example of this artist's work. The painting measures 9" x 5.75", and the outer dimensions of the modern frame are 13" x 16". It is in excellent condition, professionally cleaned, and free of paint loss, discoloration, or scratches. The ebonized wood frame shows light wear. Wilhelm Velten was a painter of genre and animal subjects. He was born in Saint Petersburg on 21 June 1847 and died in Munich, where he settled for the majority of his life, in 1929. Works by Velten can be found in the Museum in Buffalo, USA; the Municipal Gallery and the National Gallery in Munich and the National Gallery in Prague.
