Description: These genuine antiques are monumental, outstanding 18th century castle/manor-worthy French Louis 16th chenet, or andirons, that are signed by the maker "VB" (see 9th photo) in a double urn and festoon design. Hand-made nuts and threads underneath help identify this very fine pair as early period andirons with fabulous attention to detail and form. There are four satyr head masks. They are entirely gold gilt bronze, or dore bronze. A high-carat gold–mercury amalgam was applied to the bronze, and the mercury was driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. This old process was later made illegal due to the toxic mercury fumes. Please review all photos. The last photo shows a hand-threaded column screw. Condition is excellent.
