Description: An outstanding George III era pictorial sampler completed in 1794 by Maria Tolkien (b. 1783) when she was 11 years old. Maria was the daughter of Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien (1747–1813). Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien and brother Johann Benjamin Tolkien (1752–1819) arrived in London in the 1770’s and became the ancestors of the English family name; the younger brother was J. R. R. Tolkien's second great-grandfather. This establishes the sampler being directly connected to the original Tolkien family that emigrated to England. The sampler has script in both English and French along with very detailed pictorial needlework for size, it is lovely in person! The sampler features a man and woman gathering flowers and wood in the upper portion. The lower portion features two cottages, a church, and a cow in a field near a lake. The sampler as a whole is focused around a bucolic setting. There are also two urn forms with one dated 1794 that flank the religious prayer in the center. The rest of the design features intricate floral borders and also scattered birds and bugs. The sampler is in good condition overall considering age with typical surface soiling that is prominent around edges, toning in areas, a few small separations, a few scattered small holes, etc. Please see all photos for condition.
