Ltd.) was founded in the early 19th century and became an important manufacturer of pottery. The company was based in the Staffordshire region of England, with factories among the celebrated group of Staffordshire Potteries. Throughout the 19th century, the Pratt name was associated with fine, usually multi-colored, transfer-printed engravings used to decorate earthenware lids and pots for food, pharmaceutical products and toiletries. Pratt also produced domestic earthenware including relief-molded earthenware, especially jugs and tableware called Prattware. Their engravings were so good that Prattware lids rapidly became collectibles and a first exhibition of the lids was "apparently held in 1897 only three years after Felix Pratt's death." Up to the 1960s, first Cauldon Potteries Ltd. and then other English manufacturers issued reproduction pot lids under the F. & R. Pratt name using the original Jesse Austin engravings. Collecting the lids was very fashionable in the 1920s and interest has continued to the present.
