Description: An Antique 1800's IRISH Pine Wall Hanging Storage Shelf. A delightful 19th century primitive. Like all old Irish pine antique pieces it originally had a painted finish. Looking at the wood joins, you can see the old filler that was used prior to being painted. The waxed finish, from years since, has imparted a nice smooth mellow feel to the wood. A lovely scalloped hand carved apron runs the width of the shelf. Both ends have additional carving and dropped sides connecting a long bar for hanging a towel. (the towel shown in one of our images is not included in the sale). The open box at the center has a nice carved top edge and an opening for hanging the shelf on a wall. This space would have held a small mortar and pestle. The mortar sliding down into the space with the opening of the mortar facing out. It would have been held in place with the wooden guard at the bottom, the pestle fitting into the curved sides and resting over the top of the mortar. There are two large round openings at either end of the shelf. These could have held jars for storing herbs, tea, salt or sugar. We've added two small contemporary pottery pieces that look good with the shelf and are removable. We will include these with the sale of the shelf. There is a small divided drawer at the very center. A truly charming early IRISH Pine Primitive to add to your country home. Still in excellent solid condition.Measures 20-1/2" across x 18-1/2" high x 5-3/4" back to front. The round openings are 3-1/2" across.
