Victorian paper scraps were initially used in German bakeries to decorate cakes and confirmation wafers. They went on to use them on biscuits and cakes for the festive season and people began to collect them. This grew into a demand for them for party cakes and all occasions. Colourful paper scraps and Dresden foil die cuts were also used to embellish greeting cards, valentines, and ornaments to celebrate important holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. The most expensive Victorian era scraps were finished with gold leaf. The coat of arms of the United Kingdom features the motto Dieu et mon droit ("God and my right") and a Scottish unicorn, among other elements: · · Motto: The motto appears on a scroll below the shield. It's said to have originated with Richard I as a battle cry, and refers to the divine right of the monarch to govern. · · Unicorn: The unicorn is chained on the left side of the shield to represent that it has been brought under the monarch's command. Legend has it that only a king could overpower a unicorn. · · Shield: The shield is quartered, with the lions of England in the first and fourth quarters, the lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland in the second quarter, and a harp for Ireland in the third quarter. · · Supporters: The shield is supported by the English lion on the right and the Scottish unicorn on the left. · · Crown: The shield is surmounted by the Royal crown. · · Plant badges: The plant badges of the United Kingdom, the rose, thistle, and shamrock, are often displayed beneath the shield. · · Order of the Garter: The Order of the Garter, the United Kingdom's highest order of knighthood, is represented by the Garter belt behind the shield. · · Helmet: A gold helmet with mantling of gold and ermine sits above the shield. · · Crest: A crown with a crowned lion standing on it sits on top of the helmet.
