Description: ANTIQUE 16.4" WOOD HAND CARVED HONEY LICKER ANGEL CHERUB PUTTO STATUE SCULPTURE Hand carved out of solid wood. Polychrome finish, 24 carat gold plated. The honey licker is a putto, a figure made of plaster, created by the sculptor and stucco artist Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer. It is located in the pilgrimage church of Birnau on the left above the right side altar, the altar of St. Bernard dedicated to Bernard of Clairvaux. The depiction suggests the nickname of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, given to him by his contemporaries because of his gift for preaching. They called him "Doctor mellifluus" (honey-flowing teacher) because words flowed from his mouth like honey. The figure further refers to the diligence of bees, and to temptation as a transgression. The curly hair, the well-formed belly and the cautious posture, the source of the honey, wanting to hide the beehive a little, suggest a mischievous "Moritz" after Wilhelm Busch, but his counterpart is obviously not a "Max", he seems serious and almost stern, as he points with his finger into the book. They are meaningfully treated like statues and represent, after all, great figures. Authentic and genuine from Germany!
