Antique 5" diameter 4" tall ruffled edge Holophane Extensive 106225 E-3 shade is a really beautiful holophane prismatic glass shade in excellent condition. This is an estate item from a home built in 1870 with a single family occupancy into the 1980s when I acquired this piece. HistoryHolophane Glass dates back to the late 19th century when it was first developed by a French engineer and inventor named André Blondel. In 1898, Blondel collaborated with the French glass manufacturer, Société des Verreries Mécaniques de Saint-Gobain, to develop a new type of glass that could control and distribute light more efficiently. The term "Holophane" is derived from the Greek words "holos" meaning "whole" and "phanos" meaning "light." Holophane Glass was designed with a prismatic pattern on its surface. This pattern consisted of a series of ridges, prisms, or other optical elements that manipulated the path of light passing through the glass.
