Description: This is a substantial storage jar, 51cm high, from the post-Sasanian period Near East dating between 750 - 1000 A.D. This would have been hand made for the purpose of transporting goods throughout the world, such as date syrup. Jars of this form have been found from east Africa to Japan. With four applied loop handles to the neck. The turquoise colour and the undulating pattern of pinched clay decoration around the shoulder and flower head roundels would have been expensive additions to an otherwise common and simple product. Some areas of glaze have forms a beautiful rainbow hued iridescence. Very similar examples to this include one on display at the Victoria & Albert museum London. Accession # CIRC.106-1929 Other examples; Christie's, 31 Mar 2009, lot 66 and 26 April, 2013, lot 274 Some professional restorations. To the body & handles, including restored breaks and some colour filling. Otherwise intact and in beautiful shape for its age. Please look at the photos carefully for details on condition and ask any questions you have or request more photos. An Impressive Post-Sasanian Turquoise Glazed Storage Jar 8th-10th Century A.D.
