Description: AN EXALTATION OF LARKS or VENEREAL GAMES (in the old English use of the term, referring to wordplay), James Lipton, 1968 stated 1st printing, Grossman Publishers (New York), 10.125 x 6.75-inch linen-clad HB with embossed gold lettering at spine, mylar-protected DJ, 118 pp. + a final unnumbered, illustrated page printed on semi-thick, high-quality, softly cream-colored, matte-finsihed stock which looks great at age 56; excellent condition (book and DJ, which has $4.95 at upper front flap). This is a fun book which offers up scores of strange descriptive terms devised by wordsmiths in Olde England who engaged in a recreation called Venereal Games, which amounted to clever wordplay. It's filled with some wonderfully poetic phrases and many that are clearly satirical, and the period illustration by various artists are rare and fascinating. Lipton (1926-2020) was born and raised in Detroit by a teacher/librarian Mom and a writer/Beatnik Dad. He went on to become a prolific actor, academic, author, choreographer, interviewer, scriptwriter and producer of stage and TV programming. He's best known to modern audiences for producing and hosting the delightful and popular INSIDE THE ACTORS' STUDIO, filmed in New York City, on which he interviewed acclaimed, often award-winning actors before an appreciative audience of current Actors Studio students. It ran on an irregular basis from 1994-2019. He was nominated for two and won one Daytime Emmy Award (Lifetime Achievement), and was nominated for 21 Prime Time Emmy Awards, winning one (Best Talk Show series, INSIDE THE ACTORS' STUDIO, 2013). There are many copies on eBay, HB and PB, and most of the HBs are later printings in lesser condition. None have mylar covers. My excellent 1st printing with a mylar cover is a sweet collectible and uncommon. The Buy-It-Now price of $24.00 includes shipping with stiff cardboard backing in a padded envelope via media mail, which takes around 7 days with tracking.
