Original calf and paper covered boards. Some of the leather spine missing. Front joint broken but hanging on by a string. Rear joint okay. Boards with wear, spotting and staining. Text with many dog ears and heavy foxing but complete and still well bound. Maps are tanned and somewhat crisp and have some edges that are folded. In very good shape overall. U.S. map has some hand coloring. Closed tear along fold of North America map. Short tear at tab of US map. Tear at tab of South America Map. Please see photos for these and other details. (Please search for yourself). Samuel Lewis (the American not to be confused with the British cartographer Samuel Lewis) was born around 1754 and died in 1822. He was by some accounts an Irish immigrant who came to the US in the late 18th Century. He worked closely with patriot Mathew Carey, British map publisher Aaron Arrowsmith and others to elevate map-making in America.
