Description: AN AGE OF FLOWERS NATURE: SENSE & SENTIMENT IN VICTORIAN AMERICA by Doris L. Swarthout ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Hardcover with unclipped dust jacket; 159 pages; Size Approx. 7 1/2 X 8 1/4. Published by The Chatham Press; copyright 1975. Details: "In America, before the turn of the century, before the World Wars, mass pollution and the massive spread of pavement over field and meadow, an intensely romantic, frequently wise and sometimes naive union existed between man and nature. An Age of Flowers is an affectionate and admiring look at this aspect of the Victorian era, drawing on a wide variety of the most popular written and illustrative material of the period. The fondness for flowers was not only directed to those in cultivated gardens, but to an indoor profusion in pots and hanging baskets, those growing wild in the woods, preserved in dried arrangements, painstakingly reproduced imitations in wax, carved and painted on furniture and on all manner of bric-a-brac. Flowers, trees and all growing things were more than decorative objects. Children were believed to be morally enriched through an appreciation of botany. Women were admonished to avoid gloves when gardening lest spiritual communion with the soil be diminished. Yet for all the virtuous and poetic idealism associated with nature, there was a huge and devoted audience for the purely practical horticultural advice to be found in nearly every popular publication. Magazines, books, catalogs, and 'parlor annuals' also provided illustrated how-to-do-it floral craft instruction. From this great wealth of material, Mrs. Swarthout has composed an intimate and appealing portrait of a more optimistic time when sense and sentiment lived together in harmony. One cannot read An Age of Flowers without acknowledging some parallel phenomena today when, once again, a new awareness of the earth and of greenery, both indoors and out, moves a multitude of Americans. All those caught up in today's natural-living and ecological consciousness will surely find special delight and strong sense of continuity with An Age of Flowers." For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
