The fondness for flowers was not only directed to those in cultivated gardens, but to an indoor profusion in pots and hanging baskets, those growing wild in the woods, preserved in dried arrangements, painstakingly reproduced imitations in wax, carved and painted on furniture and on all manner of bric-a-brac. Flowers, trees and all growing things were more than decorative objects. Children were believed to be morally enriched through an appreciation of botany. Women were admonished to avoid gloves when gardening lest spiritual communion with the soil be diminished. Yet for all the virtuous and poetic idealism associated with nature, there was a huge and devoted audience for the purely practical horticultural advice to be found in nearly every popular publication. Magazines, books, catalogs, and 'parlor annuals' also provided illustrated how-to-do-it floral craft instruction. From this great wealth of material, Mrs. Swarthout has composed an intimate and appealing portrait of a more optimistic time when sense and sentiment lived together in harmony. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate.
