Major Dwight Eisenhower drafted the Commission's first "Guide to the American Battlefields in Europe," 278 pages long, published in 1927. Eleven years later, the Commission published this updated and much-expanded version, "American Armies and Battlefields in Europe," 547 pages long. Both are still useful reference works. Both volumes were organized by region and campaign -- Aisne-Marne, St. Mihel, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne, and the areas north of Paris including Flandes, Ypres, the St. Quentin Canal Tunnel, and Cantigny. Both included narrative, photographs, and maps. Both included useful summaries on America's war mobilization and the organization of American forces for deployment to Europe, the Services of Supply, the Navy, and defensive sectors. This 1938 edition was able to correct errors in the earlier Guide, published when information was not always "reliable." The 1927 Guide outlined planned cemeteries and memorials; this 1938 volume describes the completed projects. TABLE OF CONTENTS I.
