Abrams, 1966 A founding document of performance and environmental art, and the first by a major publisher, Kaprow's ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONMENTS & HAPPENINGS was originally planned as an official Fluxus publication (see CODEX p. 288), but eventually evolved into this broader book. Scarce Burlap-covered Hardcover w/ tan stamped printing. 343 pp., aprox. 250 pages of large illustrations. With the Original plastic jacket. Offset-printed Large-scale photographs of works and performances throughout. Features Kaprow's theory of the evolution of abstract expressionist painting into Proto-Pop, Neo-Dada, Assemblage, Environments and Happenings of the early 1960s. Documents throughout with a selection of scenarios by 9 Japanese of the Gutai Group Gutai Group [Sadamasa Motonaga, Akira Kanayama, Shuzo Mukai, Saburo Murakami, Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Michio Yoshihara, Tsuruko Yamsaki, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kenneth Dewey, Milan Knízák, and Allan Kaprow. Designed and compiled by Kaprow. A comprehensive survey of Kaprow's own Happenings, interlaced with photographic documentation and contextual analyses of the work being done by his artistic contemporaries. Includes an 'introductory' text by Kaprow, found in the middle of the book next to the colophon, and printed on contrasting brown paper stock. The preface to the text reads: "Artists, like critics and historians, make the history they reflect, even with the best intentions to remain objective. I thought, when I began writing, that I should try both to observe and to influence as much as possible. But any book conceived in the middle of things rapidly evolving is bound to be topical and incomplete. This is its obvious limitation, as well as its special merit." The curious decision to place the introduction in the centre of the book reflects Kaprow's vision of art as a rapidly evolving process. The publication features the work of many Happenings and Fluxus artists alongside Kaprow: works and performances by Robert Whitman; Yayoi Kusama; Jim Dine; Jean Tinguely and Clarence Schmidt are all documented, as well as special sections on the work of: 9 Japanese of the Gutai Group; Jean-Jacques Lebel; Wolf Vostel; George Brecht; Kenneth Dewey and Milan Knízák. These case studies usefully contextualise the work of Kaprow, thereby suggesting his Happenings to be part of a burgeoning art movement.
