Hamilton responds to an earlier letter from Major John H Buell [not present]. At the time of the letter Hamilton was the Senior Officer of the United States army being outranked only by George Washington. Washington's role was largely ceremonial, and Hamilton led de facto command over the army. The body of the letter is in the hand of a secretary, but authentically signed by Hamilton. "I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the twenty sixth of August. / With great consideration / I am Sir / Yr obd't servant / A. Hamilton."
