Karamon Gate (Shinto) Temple Nikko Date: 1880s Medium: Albumen print on plain mount Size of Image: 8 x 10 1/4 inches Size of Mount: 11 x 14 inches Condition: Light to medium tonal image, light hand coloring, some light soiling/rubbing to image, mount shows soiling/rubbing, edges/corners of mount rubbed/bumped. Other: Early view of Karamon which is the main gate of the Toshogu Shinto Shrine at Nikko, Japan. This was the gate used only by the most important visitors to the shogun in the Edo Period. The wording above the door is said to read, “Emperor Shun’s Morning Greetings.” One source describes the group in front as costumed celebrators of the Toshogu Festival while another source calls them Priests with swords.
