Description: Breathtaking 3-dimensional etched copy of Albrecht Dürer’s engraving Virgin and Child with the Monkey, c.1498. This was created by photographing an original Durer impression onto a glass slide at true size. The image was then transferred onto a copper plate and etched. The plate, now a 3-dimensional facsimile of Dürer's original plate, was then inked, wiped, and printed with an intaglio press, just as Dürer did over 500 years ago. Made by Amand Durand in France in the 1800s and cut from its original book. I found it impossible to photographically capture the extraordinarily fine detail of this etching. The accuracy with which it copies Dürer's original is startling, even for Amand Durand. Outstanding printed image condition. Trimmed outside the plate marks. The sheet shows an extremely fine curved scratch outside the image on the left, several small faint stains on the front outside the image, and small stains on the back. All are clear in the lot photos. Etched image: 7.5 inches tall x 4.75 inches wide; plate marks: 8.5 tall x 5.4 inches wide; sheet: 9 inches tall x 6.2 inches wide.
