"Akerendam" ShipwreckIn January 1725, the "Akerendam", a newly built Dutch VOC vessel sailed from Texel, Netherlands heading for Java, loaded with 19 chests of gold and silver. She went in a convoy with two other ships, but drifted away in a storm and sank off of Runde, on the Norwegian west coast. Of the 200 people on board there were no survivors. The wreck site was close to shore and during the summer of 1725 four chests and other parts of the cargo were salvaged. Soon the divers gave up, and the wreck was forgotten. The wreck was finally discovered in 1972 by scuba divers. Below the bottom vegetation, the sand bottom was littered with encrusted coins. Little remained of the ship, but more than 500 kg gold and silver was salvaged. In total 57,000 coins were recovered, 6600 gold and the rest silver. The seven northern provinces of the Netherlands (including Zeeland, West Friesland, Friesland, Gelderland, Holland, Utrecht and Overijssel) declared their independence from Spanish domination in 1581 becoming the Republic of the Netherlands. In the following century the "Golden age" of Dutch history, the Netherlands became a great sea and colonial power, a patron of the arts and a refuge for the persecuted. Holland, a Dutch maritime province fronting on the North Sea, is the most important region of the Netherlands, a leader in maritime activities and efficient agriculture. During the period of Spanish domination, Holland was the bulwark of the protestant faith in the Netherlands and the focus of the resistance to Spanish tyranny.
