A PSYCHIATRIC GLOSSARY The American Psychiatric Association takes pride in presenting this new edition of A Psychiatric Glossary in the wake of a first edition which proved so useful to scores of thousands of people. A comparison of the new with the old edition reflects the general lines of advance in psychiatry over the past decade. In 1957, when the first edition appeared, the new psychotropic drugs had just established themselves in the psychiatric armamentarium and their tremendous potential was not clearly perceived. While research in the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental illness was considered promising, their terminology was not sufficiently in circulation to justify inclusion in a popular glossary. The old-fashioned terms associated with mental deficiency remained in vogue. While one spoke loosely at the time of "community psychiatry," the definitive work of the Joint Commission on Mental Illness and Health was barely under way, and no one at the time would have dreamed that its bold recommendations for a national community mental health program would have the unequivocal support of a President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and the U.S. Congress. All of these developments are accounted for in the many new words in this volume. The Committee's effort to bring its definitions into closer accord with the official Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders further serves the interest of clarity. Many other minor improvements in style are to be noted. May we look forward to a third edition some years hence which will reflect as much progress! The Committee on Public Information deserves the Association's thanks for a job well done. Those who thought so highly of the first edition should doubly welcome the second.
