Russell received his B.A. in Russian Language and Literature from Yale University in 1969. His activities in the chess world have included translating, writing and organizing. He was tournament director for the 1971 United States Junior Champion ship in Portland, Oregon, and has qualified for the title of National Tournament Director in the U.S. Articles and translations from Soviet journals and manuscripts have appeared in Chess Life & Review, Chess Digest, and Chess. Previous to this independent work, he translated The Pirc Defense by G. Fridshtein and the widely acclaimed Tal-Botvinnik, 1960, Match for the World Champion ship, by Mikhail Tal. Mr. Russell is also a regular columnist for Chess Digest.
