Description: Tall, ovoid-shaped narrow-necked bottle vase with an eggshell matte body and thick, white drips of shino glaze pouring both up and down the bottle. The main characteristic of shino glaze is of a satin-like white color, occasionally with, red – yellow flashing and black spotting, a result of carbon trapping in the firing process. Usually in firing a Shino glaze, the potter utilizes a wood-fired anagama kiln. Shino firing tends to use lower temperatures in comparison to celadon and porcelain firing, but fires for a longer period of time with a slow cooling process. Approximately 8 ½ inches tall, 5 inches at widest part of the body. The vessel is in very good condition with no damage to the clay body. Some of the thicker parts of the shino glaze have chipped. This likely happened during cooling or shortly after as the damage is limited to only the heaviest parts of the glaze (see photos.) In my opinion, this adds to the wabi-sabi appeal to the vessel and gives the viewer a glimpse of the naked clay in juxtaposition with the ash-glazed surface.
