Description: TITHONIA DIVERSIFOLIA is a beautiful, bushy plant full of large, vibrant yellowish-orange flowers that blooms in the spring and again toward the end of the summer and through the fall. All cuttings come from my garden in South Florida. They are cut them right before I ship them. CROP AND DROP PLANT: The chopped leaves and stems can be used as a nutrient-rich mulch or compost. Go to YouTube for videos about using Tithonia Diversifolia as a Biomass Plant for fertilizer.POLLINATORS: We have an apiary on our property and our bees, as well as local moths and butterflies, love these Mexican sunflowers. MATURE HEIGHT: Mexican sunflowers can grow from 8 to 12 feet tall. PLANTING: Plant your Mexican sunflower cuttings immediately upon receiving them by placing them in pots with soil about 2-4 inches deep. As they root easily in my zone and send out new leaves within a week of potting them in regular Miracle Grow Garden Soil, I don't use root tone. If you decide to experiment with that on a few of your cuttings, please message me and let me know if it made a difference. They also root quickly when placed in water. Place the pots in partial shade until they begin to send out leaves and then plant in the ground. I recommend googling "How to manage Tithonia Diversifolia and make compost tea and/or green manure" or something similar. Although there is controversy regarding whether Tithonia Diversifolia is invasive or not, pruning it and using it as a miracle plant that provides free fertilizer for my fruit trees has been a positive for me. I have not personally experienced it growing in my yard anywhere that I have not planted it. LIGHT: Full sun to partial shade is best. Full sun results in the best flower production, but the plants will tolerate some shade. HUMIDITY: Mexican sunflowers are well suited to the hot and humid tropics. The plants tolerate heavy rainfall and have a moderate drought tolerance. Regardless of where you are located, water Mexican sunflower plants regularly until they become established. After they take root, the plants are drought tolerant and will need supplemental watering only during dry spells.SOIL: Suitable for light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. PRUNING: I cut them back often to control their height and keep some of them bushy. It also keeps the flowers lower to the ground so that I can easily reach them for cut flowers in vases. Note that buds bloom after the stalk has been cut, so you don't have to feel bad if you get a few buds in with your cut flowers. FERTILIZATION: This plant does not require a large amount of nutrients because it is able to increase the amount of essential nutrients in the soil itself. PLEASE UNBOX YOUR CUTTINGS AND PLANT OR PUT IN WATER IMMEDIATELY AFTER ARRIVAL!
