THERE IS VERY DETAILED INFO. BELOW THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING YOUR MAGNETO WITH ANOTHER 610759 MAGNETO OR 610760 TRANSFORMER. THIS IMPORTANT INFO. WILL TELL YOU WHAT CAUSED THE OTHER ONE TO BURN OUT, AND WHY IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN IF IT IS NOT PROTECTED, ALONG WITHHOW TO MAKE IT WHERE IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!!! YES!!!! WE SAID, "EVER HAPPENING AGAIN!!!!". THIS IS LABELED AS FOR PARTS NOT WORKING BECAUSE THERE ARE JUST WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT THINK THEY CAN JUST HOOK ANOTHER ONE UP AND THINK THEY ARE ALL GOOD TO GO!THAT IS THE WORST THING ONE COULD EVER, EVER DO!!! THIS IS THE MAIN REASONS WHY NO PLACE OUT THERE IN ALL OF THE USA WILL ALLOW ANYRETURNS ON ELECTRICAL ITEMS OF THIS NATURE AND NEITHER DO WE. SOMETHING SHORTED YOURS OUT!!!!!! BELOW IS THE WHY, WHAT, WHERE AND HOW TO PREVENT IT FROM EVER HAPPENING AGAIN!!! THE MOST COMMON THING THAT BURNS THESE (THE 610759 AND 610760) UNITS OUT IS A OLD WORN-OUT IGNITION SWITCH OR BARE OLD WIRING. BELOW IS ALSO WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TRYING TOBUY OTHER NON SOLID STATE IGNITION UNIT PARTS; There are people out there making these out of cheap Chinese's parts. Like the 610760 Transformer coil is made out of thin wrapped aluminum foil. They will not withstand the heat from what these Tecumseh cast iron engines generate.The same with the Magneto on the 610759 unit (here). The worst though is their modules are not made with heat resistant diodes that will withstand them high temperatures that these Tecumseh cast iron engines generate. Now You're probably thinking that maybe your unit is just old and gave out on ya. NOPE! Not the case! These were not made back in the day to just give out!Tecumseh Lauson made these with SOLID STATE Components that were never meant to go bad. The 610760 Transformer coil was made with thick Spooled Copper windings and then epoxy sealed shut to keep all AIR AND MOISTURE OUT.Same with the Magneto on this 610759 unit here that passes through the other unit (the module that's on it) and on up that tiny wire to (what most would call a coil) the 610760 Transformer. The Heat resistant diodes inside the module on this 610759 unit is like that of white hard chalk inside of a thin porcelain layer. Yes. The same stuff used on and in high voltage transformers to power homes. Sure the China Coil might work good during the winter colder months until the next needed replacement for another $$$ out of your wallet plus the inconvenience of more wasted time of having to tear it all apart to replace it with another one.Their (china's) motto is build cheap to live to a short warranty. Ask yourself, do you really believe the Their Coil would live up to the Expectations of the Tecumseh / Lauson Solid State ignition units? Of Course not! Most of these USED Tecumseh solid State parts are now over 56 years old and still working! WHY? It was all because of how they were made. Back in the day Tecumseh, Kohler, Clinton, Briggs & Stratton, Wisconsin and many others like REO and ONAN were all in competition with one another to build the best of the best!!All to gain the trust of the American people and make a Name for themselves. That They pretty much all did!Many of them engines are still running today from the 40s, 50s and 60s!! Again, All because of how they were built! Now Your old Unit shorted out but why? Answer: NEGLECT!!! TECUMSEH FIXING/REPAIRING AND PREVENTION: The most common thing is the ignition key switch. The contacts from inside the switch will become loose from getting turned on and off thousands of times. This causes the (B) Battery contact on the inside of the switch to flop over onto the (M) Magneto contact ( or visa versa) and run that 12-volt current back thru the (M) wire to the module on the 610759 unit. This will burn out that part (Module) in a Hot second! We all know that DC ( Direct Current ) is not the same as AC ( Alternating current ). They do not play well with each other! Never have!Now if your engine happens to be at a higher RPMs (Like while Mowing) when that ignition switch starts acting up then, It will shoot that 12v current back threw that wire like Lightning and burn out One, Two or possibly all Three of them components out at once!Again, they are The Module, The Magneto and The Transformer coil. At a lower RPMs then it Tends to just take out the more expensive unit on the 610759 unit called the Module but We would never bet on it! Now here is one thing that should alert a person, If You're riding along and you start to hear your engine making like aHIT / MISFIRING every once in a while, then your first reaction should be to shut her down and immediately put on another ignition switch. We say this because it could be the (G) contact rattling around a little too close to the (M) contact inside the Ignition key switch. Now that will not hurt anything. It is just trying to kill the engine as if you were to reach over and shut off the key switch. This should be telling you though that you need to get the switch off there and replace it with a new one. We say that because they all are more than likely becoming loose inside of the ignition switch which means that the B and M could accidently come into contact with one another which is why you are most likely looking at this one. NEVER EVER try to use an old ignition key switch or it could get very costly as well. Now when replacing the Ignition key switch with a new one, TECUMSEH Starter/Generator type engines. Make sure to mark all (old starter/generator style set up) wiring first and then take your old switch with You to the parts place to make sure they give You the exact same switch with letter/rivets lining up identically as old one. If it continues to still mis after instalment of a new key switch, then revert to all other troubleshooting technics. I would always revert to the worst first that you might think is starting to fail before thinking that a spark plug is going bad or possibly a bare (M) Magneto wire that is slightly touching the engine/frame causing this misfire. Basically, if you do not know how long the switch has been on your tractor, Argo or whatever your engine is on but You do know the switch has been used a lot from being turned on and off plus, always left out in the weather/rain/snow then yea!, Think the worst, first! Now if you're NOT doing a restoration to put your tractor back to the original shape like when it came off the assembly line then, remove that (M) wire running from the engine to the ignition switch. Then run another wire from the other terminal on the toggle switch back to a ground on the engine block.Now you know for sure that the (B) 12v Battery juice will never come into contact with the (M) Magneto contact terminal again. You simply turn the toggle on and then turn your key switch to the starter take off position. TO KILL THE ENGINE; To shut your engine off, turn your key switch off and then reach over to click the toggle off to shut the engine down. The best toggle to buy is a ON/ MONTARY OFF Toggle; The ON / MOMENTARY OFF Toggle is a better set up because a ON / OFF toggle can still short out the unit if a person accidently happens to arc the battery across the terminals or what not. That wont happen with it being MOMENTARY OFF toggle.Why? Because it was only grounded out to shut the engine down but nowit is back to the on position so that when you hit the ignition key switch it willautomatically start when you give the switch a turn to the starter take off position.You still must shut your key switch all the way off and then reach over and push down on or push in onthe MOMENTARY toggle to kill the engine but you will see the switch automatically go back to the on position.Do not think that it will run your battery dead! It is not tied to any juice at all! Now if you are just going to use a regular on / off toggle or actual factorykey switch then...... The other thing is, Never arc weld on the item that Your engine is on without unhooking both the spark plug wire and the wire that goes to that plastic tab on the front of the engine's flywheel cover. The last thing is; if You just got done power washing Your engine then, DO NOT try to fire the engine up right afterwards before it has had ample time to totally dry out!Water carries current! TRUST ME ON THIS!!!!Larry himself forgot and didn't give it any thought as He was power washing a bunch of his equipment one day and well....He got lucky and only burned out the module on this 610759 unit and not the magneto on it or the 610760 (Spark plug coil) transformer. Okay well that should give you a good understanding of what more than likely happen to why your parts quit working. TECUMSEH PROPER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.... NOW WHEN YOU INSTALL THE MAGNETO BEHIND THE FLYWHEEL,MAKE SURE THE KILL WIRE IS IN GOOD SHAPE THAT RUNS TO THAT PLASTIC TAB ON THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE OR IT WILL GROUND OUT THE MAGNETO CAUSING IT TO NOT WORK.THIS WON'T HURT ANYTHING. IT JUST GROUNDS OUT THE MAGNETO SO IT WILL NOT SEND ANY JUICE UP THE MODULE ON THE 610759 WHICH THEN TRAVELS ON UP THE 610760 TRANSFORMER WIRE TO FIRE THE SPARK PLUG.BUT! IF THAT STAYS GROUNDED OUT AND YOU ACIDENTLY ARC THE BATTERY, THEN THE SAME THING WILL HAPPEN AS ABOVE! AS FOR THE TRANSFORMER 610760 WIRE!MAKE SURE YOUR TRANSFORMER WIRE IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. THAT WIRE CANNOT TOUCH OR COME INTO CONTACT WITH ANY METAL OR IT WILL BLOW UP BOTH THE 610760 & 610759 UNITS!!! NOW TUCK THE TRANSFORMER WIRE AND KILL WIRE BEHIND THE LITTLE METAL TAB AND PUSH TAB IN.THEN SLIDE THE 610759 MAGNETO UNIT ON TO THE SHAFT AND HOOK UP THE KILL WIRE TO THE BACK OF THE 610759 THAT RUNS TO THE PLASTIC TAB ON THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. THEN PUT THE BOLTS IN LOOSELY ON THE 610759 MAGNETO. NOW THIS BELOW IS VERY IMPORTANT! GIVE THE TRANSFORMER FLAG TERMINAL WIRE (IF YOU STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL FLAG TERMINAL CONNECTOR ON IT) JUST A LITTLE TWIST TO WHERE THE WIRE ITSELF FACES DOWN TOWARDS THE ENGINES SHAFT AND THEN PLUG IT ON THE MODUAL. (SEE 5TH PHOTO!). NOW MAKE SURE THE TRANSFORMER WIRE GOING TO THE TERMINAL ON THE 610759 MODUAL IS NOWHERE CLOSE TO TOUCHING THE SCREW BOLT THAT YOU JUST PUT IN LOOSLY ON THE 610759. NOW IF YOU HAVE TO, BEND THE MALE TERMINAL TAB (JUST A LITTLE BIT) OUTWARDS TOWARDS YOU THEN DO SO.NOW TURN THE 610759 MAGNETO ALL THE WAY COUNTERCLOCKWISE AND TIGHTEN THE SCREW BOLTS DOWN 5 TO 7 FOOT POUNDS. NOW YOU CAN INSTALL THE FLYWHEEL. THESE GO TO A FEW DIFFERENT ENGINES BUT ARE MAINLY FOUND ON THE CAST IRON HH80, HH100 VH100 VH120 & HH120 ENGINES A LOT OF PEOPLE SELL THESE UNITS HERE ON EBAY AND DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE IF THEY WORK OR NOT.
