6" dia. antique Nernst Lamp Co Pittsburgh ceramic filament light Vtg 1901 bulb

Description: Rare antique Nernst lamp dating to the 1901 period or shortly thereafter. The 6" diameter globe has a 3" fitter opening and the glass has interesting very small dimples and wavy lines which are a testament to its age. On the top of the lamps body is a large embossed "P" which may be a reference to the companys name Pittsburg Nernst. Overall it measures 12-1/2" from the top of the hanger to the bottom of the shade. George Westinghouse founded the Nernst Lamp Company in Pittsburgh, PA in 1901 which is where this one was made. It was a competing (and more energy efficient) product to Edison's carbon arc lamp. They relied on a small heated ceramic bar to create the light and were often referred to as "Nernst Glowers". Although this one has no ceramic element insert the original elements had multiple prong contacts that plugged into the lamp and were easily removed and replaced when needed. It was a short lived technology in the advancement of electric lighting that was evolving in the early part of the 20th century. They are historically important and rare to find today. It is in overall good condition. No breaks or repairs. The shade has some minor chipping along the fitter edge but no cracks. Normal surface wear and may have darkened surfaces from age. There is no ceramic element insert. The light offered here is one of a group of them (please see our other listings for some of the others) recently found in the storage of an old building where they had been boxed up for about 100 years.
