This is achieved by careful reduction of indigo in an alkaline environment. For dyeing, the fabric is impregnated with a colorless alkaline solution of leukoindigo and then removed from the dye bath and exposed to air. Lecoindigo is easily oxidized by atmospheric oxygen and again turns into an insoluble blue pigment.
