Description: This set includes three African bronze gold weights, representing the Akan-Asante and Lobi cultures from Ghana and Burkina Faso, as well as the Baule people of Ivory Coast. These weights, also called Islamic weights, were used in the past as figurines or abstract designs to measure gold for trade, as the use of gold was limited due to Islamic restrictions. Each weight was carefully calibrated and included copper insets to accurately weigh the gold. These weights were an important tool for gold traders, and their use continued until Europeans introduced their own currency. The Baule mask measures approximately 3.5" x 2.25" x 0.75", the Akan triangular weight measures 1.75" x 1.75" x 0.25", and the round weight measures 1.25" in diameter. The weights have a nice patina and are made of bronze.
