It is a large native shade tree known for its adaptability to cold climates, its aesthetic beauty and the production of the popular pecan nut that is both delicious and nutritious. Pecan trees can reach up to 130 feet in height but will usually grow 70 to 100 feet tall with a spread of 40 to 75 feet. The largest of the hickories, this deciduous tree has a uniform, symmetrical, broadly oval crown and is massively-branched. This grows best in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates clay, sand, and loam soils—alkaline or acidic—as long as they are well drained. It has high drought tolerance . The pinnate compound leaves are comprised of medium-green leaflets eventually turning a harvest gold color for fall. Dimensions:Height: 70 ft. 0 in. - 100 ft. 0 in.Width: 40 ft. 0 in. - 75 ft. 0 in. USDA Plant Hardiness Zone:5a to 9a Medicinal use of : The bark and leaves are astringent. A decoction of the bark has been used to treat TB. Sweet and delicious, they make an excellent dessert and are also often added to ice cream, used in cakes, bread etc. A milk can be made from the seed and is used to thicken soups, season corn cakes, hominy etc. The seed is up to 4cm long and is produced in clusters of 3 -11. The seed ripens in late autumn and, when stored in its shell in a cool place, will keep for at least 6 months. An edible oil is obtained from the seed.
