You are bidding on about 30 SOUTHERN CATALPA SEEDS - Catalpa bignonioides. ( see my other catalpa species listed )The southern catalpa is an attractive small to medium sized deciduous tree that grows to about 25-50 ft (7.6-1.2 m) in height. It is of similar width with a short trunk that supports a broad, open and rounded crown. Catalpa has large tropical looking heart-shaped leaves that are up to 8 in (20.3 cm) long and held oppositely on the stems (often in a whorl with three leaves emerging from the same point along the stem). The white bell-shaped blossoms are 2 in (5.1 cm) in diameter and patterned with small purple spots and two large orange markings at the throat. The flowers are followed by long slender cigar-shaped pods up to 16 in ( cm) in length. The green pods ripen to brown in fall and split to release flat fringed seeds. Very similar to and frequently confused with Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa), which also occasionally escapes, but Northern Catalpa has slightly larger flowers (4-6 cm broad) with a notched lower corolla lobed and Southern has smaller flowers (2-4 cm). Northern Catalpa also blooms slightly earlier (May-June vs. June ) and sets fruit earlier (July-Aug. vs. Oct.). Zone: 5 - 10 Light: Full sun to partial shade. Medicinal use of : A tea made from the bark has been used as an antiseptic, antidote to snake bites, laxative, sedative and vermifuge. As well as having a sedative effect, the plant also has a mild narcotic action, though it never causes a dazed condition. It has therefore been used with advantage in preparations with other herbs for the treatment of whooping cough in children, it is also used to treat asthma and spasmodic coughs in children. The bark has been used as a substitute for quinine in treating malaria. The leaves are used as a poultice on wounds and abrasions. A tea made from the seeds is used in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis and is applied externally to wounds. The pods are sedative and are thought to have cardioactive properties. Distilled water made from the pods, mixed with eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) and rue (Ruta graveolens) is a valuable eye lotion in the treatment of trachoma and conjunctivitis. Other uses : Wood - soft, not strong, light, coarse-grained, very durable in the soil. It weighs 26lb per cubic foot. It is largely used for fence posts and rails, telegraph poles etc, it is also occasionally used for making furniture, the interior finish of buildings etc See my store for 600+ seeds , live plants ( during the warmer months ) and over 300+ books on plants and gardening .
