It was a very different railroad than today. Double headers were the norm, and no passenger cars existed. Covered in this VIDEO is mike number 483, now out of service. This loco still stands in the Chama yard, but has not been run for many years. Mike 487 also helps out sporting it's snowplow for these runs. Research and script by John M. Koch who has spent many years chasing and studying Colorado Narrow gauge. This is a Fall color bonanza, shot in September when the aspen are at their peak by noted photographer Jerry Carson. Rio Grande's narrow gauge number 463, a class K-27 shows her stuff in this spectacular video. The class K-27 locomotive, a 2-8-2 Mikado is only one of Mikes of her class remaining in operation today. This locomotive is one of 15 built in 1903 by Baldwin, and delivered to the D&RGW. They were originally Vauclain compound locomotives, but the cost of maintenance forced their rebuilding to "simple" engines a few years after delivery. In 1923, following the laying of heavier rail, the K-27's began operation on the Antonito to Durango line, so K-27 number 463 was brought back home in 1971, having been donated by it's owner Gene Autry. With its single tone (and loud) whistle, as well as its low hung look, the K-27 (Mudhen) is very unique. Follow Rio Grande K-27 and an authentic D&RGW freight through the mountains and prairies of the Rockies. The line traverse's the territory from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito and return. Many, many runbys in remote locations mostly only accessible by train! If you want to see how it really was back in the 30’s or 40's, then this freight extra is for you! The Rio Grande Derrick OP is the second star of this show. along with authentic maintenance of way cars and caboose in this exciting program...pulled by the K-27, number 463. This video covers the ONLY time this train has ever appeared in this configuration. The program follows the train from Chama to Antonito and return... including beautiful scenes throughout the line...both tunnels, Toltec Gorge, water stops, and much, much more. A long freight, made up of D&RGW painted cars trailed the 'K' as she steamed through such locations as Lower Gallagher, Keystone Hill, Lizard Head, Vance Junction, the Ute Coal Pocket, Upper Gallagher, Bridge 45A and Brown/Meadow Creek! You'll also see interviews with some old timers, train crews, and some conversation with noted author Mallory Hope Ferrell about the RGS. Green Frog was the only professional camera crew on location, and with three broadcast cameras and two crews we captured the 'RGS' as it lives on!
