Mat Mladin may have been typically sparing in the praise of this year’s machine, but obviously, the ’04GSX-R1000 was no slouch.Still, Suzuki wants more than AMA number-one plates—it wants magazine covers as well. The Gixxer1000 illustrated here is Hamamatsu’s riposte to the Kawasaki ZX-10R, whichemerged as some magazines’ “comparison test champion.” Has Suzuki gone farenough? If the spec sheet is any indication, the answer is...maybe.The list of new parts on this bike is so exhaustive it would probably havebeen easier for Suzuki to itemize the components—if there are any—thatwent unchanged. In the interest of mass centralization and aerodynamics, anall-new frame and comprehensively revised packaging have resulted in a motorcyclea lot smaller than its predecessor: nearly two inches shorter both from front to rear, andfrom the top of the windscreen to the ground. The seat is almost an inch lower, andthe reach to the bars, again, is almost two inches shorter.Every little bit helps: a bore and stroke of 73.4mm x 59mm yields a marginallylarger displacement of 998.6cc. Despite the larger bore, pistons are lighter. Thenew cylinder head features larger valves—now made of titanium—that are sixgrams lighter than the steel valves used before. Lighter pistons and valves allowthe mill to spin 1000 rpm faster. If it spins faster, it will make more power, and if it makes more power, it will produce more heat. Ergo, it needs a big-ger radiator. A new trapezoidal unit increases cooling capacity withoutincreasing frontal area.A note from the Department of Obsessive Detail: The use of lightervalve material allowed Suzuki to revert to flat-faced valves. The minutevolume of material added to the valve faces filled combustion chambersenough to help raise compression from 12.0:1 to 12.5:1. Cylinder headand cam cover bolts were reshaped to save about 82 grams. (An equalamount of weight would be shaved, almost literally, if Mladin just got a And much more! 11075
