2 VOLUMES COMPLETE 1942 Grossvardin COMMENTARY OF RABBENU BACHYA on the Torah

Description: PRINTED IN GROSSWARDEIN IN 1942! IN MIDDLE OF THE HOLOCAUST! Life for Hungarian Jews during the first years of the Holocaust was a life of a strikingly extreme paradox, with life more or less continuing as normal thru 1944 for most of its Jews, albeit with a sharp rise in anti-semitism but with the knowledge that the Nazi killing machines were slowly closing in on them. This volume tells of the conflicting times and expresses to us some of the emotions of the Jew who chose to print the book during this traumatic period. The title is Rabbenu Bahya on the Torah, printed in two volumes in Grossvardin (Oradea), Hungary in 1942. The publisher, Rabbi Aron Hacohen Margolies (Perl), a resident of Debrecen writes how the Rabbenu Bahya was nearly forgotten due to the unavailability of his writings and he was thus eager to print it again to make it available for the seekers of knowledge. He writes of his plans to hopefully publish additional writings of Rabbenu Bahya as well as other sefarim. His introduction though concludes with a very different tone, reflecting the horrors of the era. "And now, I will raise my hands to the one in heaven, thank him for all he has done and plead for the future, that he shall see our infliction, he shall see the spilled blood of the righteous and they shall atone as the blood of sacrifices. May he say to the angel of destruction, halt! and may the name of Israel rise again and may he redeem us a final redemption, rebuild the temple, where we will fulfill our obligations as commanded in the Holy Torah, Amen. May the merit of the author assist me that I shall be able to publish his remaining works and the works of the great leaders of our generations and their preachers, to enable the masses. May I merit to live my days in Torah and Mitzvot through peace of mind, and raise my children in the way of the Torah and may I merit to see all our nation in our Holy Land. Signed Aron Hakohen Margolies" R. Margolies was deported to Auschwitz along with the Jews of his home of Debrecen, where he was murdered by the Nazi Savages. Of his 7 children who lived to adulthood, 3 were killed, Yisroel Elimelech, Avraham Yitzchak and Mano Menachem Mendel, while 4 survived the holocaust of which 3 emigrated to Eretz Yisrael.   VERY RARE EDITION OF BAHYA COMMENTARY ON TORAH, BERESHIT AND SHEMOT AND SECOND VOLUME ON VAYIKRA, BAMIDBAR AND DEVARIM     Bahye ben Asher ibn Halawa, also known as Rabbeinu Behaye ( 1255 – 1340), was a rabbi and scholar of Judaism. He was a commentator on the Hebrew Bible and is noted for introducing Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) into study of the Torah He is considered by Jewish scholars to be one of the most distinguished of the Biblical exegetes of Spain. He was a pupil of Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet (the Rashba). Unlike the latter, Bahya did not devote his attention to Talmudic science, but to Biblical exegesis, taking for his model Rabbi Moses ben Nahman who is known as Nahmanides or Ramban, the teacher of Rabbi Solomon ben Adret, who was the first to make use of the Kabbalah as a means of interpreting the Torah. He discharged with zeal the duties of a darshan ("preacher") in his native city of Zaragoza, sharing this position with several others, and on this account received a small salary, which was scarcely enough to support him and his family; but neither his struggle for daily bread nor the reverses that he suffered (to which he referred in the introduction to his commentary on the Torah) diminished his interest in Torah study in general, and in Biblical exegesis in particular.     We have over 500,000 books of Jewish interest in Stock, please make sure to check out our Our eBay Store     Questions, comments, Requests?
