Description: The McDonald Observatory, Mount Locke Logo onTwo Vintage IBM1800 Punch Cards These rare printed Punch Cards bear the Logo of the McDonald Observatory and were to be used on their IBM 1800 computer that was installed in the 1960's. This sale is for two (2) cards with free shipping. The cards are a standard manila color with black graphics. First picture shows the card from a color scan. My scanner is weird. The cards are clean, crisp, dry, unbent, unmarked, undamaged. The second picture is a black&white scan of the same card to highlight detail. The Observatory is located at Mount Locke near Fort Davis Texas. The logo drawing on the card by Kelly MacFarlane from the early 1970's Shows a Northern Looking view of Mount Locke showing The dome for their 107inch telescope built in the late 1960's on the right and to the left of that it shows the dome for their 82inch telescope built in the late 1930's and their millimeter facility lower to the left. These cards would have been used on their IBM 1800 that was installed in the late 1960's and the computer was removed in early 1980's. The retired tech from there said the IBM 1800 computer was used to "crank" astronomer's data processing programs, etc, and it held a large catalog of stars and their positions. An operator had to read a teletype printout and then enter the right ascension and declination into the telescope track system. This star catalog information was available, via teletype, in the 107inch dome, 82inch dome, 36inch dome, and the 30inch dome. Some Punch Card History: This IBM card format, designed in 1928, had rectangular holes, 80 columns with 12 punch locations each, one character to each column. Card size is exactly 7 3/8 by 3 1/4 inches (187.325 mm × 82.55 mm). The cards were made of smooth stock, 0.007 inches (180 µm) thick. There are about 143 cards to the inch (56/cm). In 1964, IBM changed from square to round corners. 1) We will only ship your item to the PayPal confirmed address that is registered to your PayPal account. 2) Item is sold as described.
