Description: For sale is a set of 2 Vintage Hand Painted floral plates with a gorgeous 1940s style Magnolia design. These beautiful plates were Hand Painted by artist Helen De Tar in the late 40s or early 50s and are reminiscent of the Vintage upholstery fabric of the 1940s. Each plate measures 6 7/8” square with rounded edges and have two holes on the top through which a ribbon or other material can be laced in order to hang them on the wall. Each plate has the original paper label affixed to the back Hand Painted by Helen De Tar California. The plates are in great Vintage condition with no cracks or chips on the pottery but do have some areas of wear on the paint especially around edges on the ivory colored border. Helen Louise French De Tar The following is from Norman Davies, who credits art historian Edan Hughes: Helen Louise French was born in Ohio on September 2, 1905. In 1941, she settled in Glendale, California where she was director of Max Weil Pottery while studying with William F. Foster. In 1946, she married John A. De Tar and established the De Tar Studio in Los Angeles, specializing in various decorative items. During her last ten years she lived in Seal Beach, California, where she was active in the local art scene and received accolades for her work. In addition to her hand painted plates and other decorative items she is also known for her landscape and still life art which can be found on auction sites and galleries. De Tar died in 1988.
