Description: Two (2) carte-de-visite photographs of women by Mason & Gardner of Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1860s. Neither of the women are identified by name, but the two photographs came from the same dealer and may show a mother and daughter. Both are full standing views of women posing for their likeness in a photographic studio, next to a painted backdrop window frame. Both of the women hold a handkerchief in their right hand and rest their left hand on the sill of the window. Both wear dresses common to the years of the Civil War era. The painted backdrop window has the seal of Rhode Island below the window sill and features a painting of a church set behind a sash window frame. Patrick Feaster published a Wordpress blog in 2016 discussing what he has termed the Rhode Island Window that includes information about this backdrop window used by the firm of Mason & Gardner. The two carte-de-visite photographs are in very good condition with minimal wear and soiling. The photographs exhibit very good tonal range and show very good detail. A nice pair of Rhode Island Window images and fine examples of Civil War era fashion!
